I'm part of the problem? Part 1...

This week’s free write will be focused on the arguably one of the greatest days of my entire time here as a Senate Page, and quite honestly a highlight of my entire internship experience. The night began with many protestors lining up outside the capitol complex (roughly 500 I believe), to protest the recently proposed budget cuts to higher education, and K-12 (even though K-12 wasn’t actually being cut—but that’s another story entirely). My fellow pages and I went outside the senate to witness people exercising their right to protest, with many of us actually supporting what they were saying—but of course were unable to participate due to our working in the senate very closely with the senators. Out of nowhere, this woman with a big sign and crazy hair approaches our group, and starts ranting about how we’re college students and somehow we’re part of the problem. What this wonderfully ignorant woman did not understand that all of us were college students enrolled at Arizona State, and would too very much be affected by the proposed cuts. Regardless, the woman continued to ramble on and even began yelling at a senator who was standing next to us. This senator—Senator Lupe Contreras—a DEMOCRAT who voted against the budget cuts, was now being yelled about by this crazy woman of why he was part of the problem.

I love how she royally misunderstood the situation, but felt so vested as to come down to the Capitol to protest. Oh, America.
