The second part of this incredible day was the simple fact that
we were visited by a very special figure in Arizona politics—the great US
Senator and former presidential candidate, the Honorable John McCain.
Rumors travel quickly around the chamber, but once word got
out that the maverick was walking around somewhere upstairs with Senators
Driggs and Worsley, we had to find out for ourselves if it were true.
Surely enough, as we made our way to the senator’s office on
the second floor, a mini crowd had begun forming outside of Senator Adam Driggs
office. Moderate Republicans, it came as no surprise as to why Senator McCain
chose these two to visit on his trip to the Senate. While no confirmation can
be made, it was our conjecture that he was there to urge the senators to break
with the party and vote against the impending Republican budget that was coming
before the floor. Finally, as he finished this drawn out conversation with the
swing votes, we were able to speak with the Senator for a few moments (this was
my third time meeting him, so I wasn’t as in awe as my fellow pages), and he so
nicely posed for a picture with us.
Quite a nice guy for someone who has so much of the nation’s
problems to deal with.
