There are many mini-perks of working as a Senate Page. While
yeah we are some of the only people allowed onto the Senate Chamber floor, and
yeah we often get the most the face-time with the senators when they’re trying
to dodge pesky reporters in the halls, or even having that little privilege of
watching democracy at work as legislation is passed and rejected everyday.
However, my little favorite perk of the job is the food…
Nearly everyday another interest group or trade association is
hosting a lunch on the lawn, and if they’re smart, they invite the senate staff
(pages included unless otherwise noted). What I mean by being smart is this:
Yes it’s all important to woo and win over the vote of a particular influential
senator, the real money counts if you’re able to win over his or her staff
(pages included). While I most certainly would not be so crass as to name
specifics, a certain trade association that has to do with big metal things to
fly through the air made the great mistake of not inviting the pages to the lunch
on the lawn when it was their turn to host. While this may seem a minor offense
to some, the pages (myself mostly) took this infraction personally, and let’s just
say certain mail items from said trade association do not always make it to
where they need to be. In truth though, these lunches are a great time for
legislators, staff, and lobbyists alike to take some time out of the office to
sit outside and share some food and have a decent time in this desperate effort
to lead this state away from oblivion. Translation: These lunches are very
important to me.
